Australia has passed new legislation for a major gun buyback scheme. The plan was agreed after the Bondi terror attack earlier this year. The scheme will officially begin in NSW from November. The government argues the measure will improve public safety. However, not everyone supports the initiative.
Minister McAllister addressed concerns about children who may lose NDIS support. She confirmed that $10bn has been allocated by premiers and the prime minister for new Foundational Supports. McAllister met with state and territory counterparts on Friday. She expressed confidence that all states will be ready to implement the changes. Additional arrangements are being developed for affected children.
Pauline Hanson from One Nation has publicly opposed the gun buyback scheme. She criticises the government's approach to firearm regulations. The Coalition has also shared some concerns about the implementation. Despite the opposition, the legislation remains in place. The program is set to proceed as planned in November.
