Democrats Push Bill to Block Trump’s Arlington Memorial Project

House Democrats Don Beyer and Dina Titus announced plans to introduce the Arlington National Cemetery Viewshed Protection Act, which would explicitly prohibit construction of President Trump's proposed 250-foot arch adjacent to the cemetery. The proposed monument, a replica of the Arc de Triomphe, has drawn criticism for its unauthorized nature and potential to obstruct the historic viewshed between Arlington and the Lincoln Memorial. While Trump maintains he possesses executive authority to proceed without Congressional authorization, the minority Democrats face significant legislative hurdles.

Beyer, whose parents, grandparents, and sister are interred at Arlington, condemned the project as a monument to personal vanity rather than national commemoration. He cited concerns regarding wasteful expenditure of public funds and potential violations of existing environmental and aviation safety regulations. Trump's candid admission that the structure was intended for himself prompted Titus to denounce the administration for dismantling social safety programs while constructing self-aggrandizing monuments to one individual.
