Owen is a young singer-songwriter from Manchester who meets Emily at the student union one evening. She keys her number into his phone before heading off, but accidentally leaves out a digit. Unable to contact her, Owen begins sticking posters across campus in hopes of tracking down the mysterious girl.
When Owen posts about his search online, an American psychology student named Emily offers to help. She suggests he email every Emily enrolled at the university – all 318 of them. Owen sends a single mass message, and reactions are split. Some students mock him as creepy, while others admire his determination. He quickly becomes a campus meme nicknamed "email guy".
