A new government report has warned that building a third runway at Heathrow Airport could seriously harm the health of up to 3 million people living nearby. The study was carried out for the Department for Transport by consultants Aecom. It found that the expansion could have major adverse effects on the local population's health and wellbeing.
Beyond health impacts, the runway would also damage access to housing, education, healthcare, green spaces and transport. It could also affect water quality, community identity and the local landscape. The report notes the project would bring economic benefits like more jobs and better skills training. However, it concludes that many negative effects cannot be fully prevented, even with mitigation measures.
