How One Company Plans to Mine the Bottom of the Sea

A Vancouver-based mining consortium has unveiled ambitious plans to harvest polymetallic nodules from the abyssal plains of the Pacific Ocean. These fist-sized concretions, formed over millions of years, contain substantial deposits of nickel, copper, cobalt, and manganese—metals critical to the energy transition. The consortium intends to deploy a fleet of autonomous collection vessels equipped with advanced hydraulic extraction systems capable of operating at depths surpassing 4,000 meters. Initial projections suggest the operation could yield approximately 1.5 million tonnes of critical minerals annually.
