Chris Wright, the current US energy secretary, was once a fracking executive. Cities and states have sued big oil companies for billions of dollars. They say the companies hid the dangers of their products. Now, rightwing groups are trying to stop these lawsuits. They claim that lawyers working on climate cases are improperly influencing federal judges.
But some people say it is actually the oil companies that are trying to sway judges. An organization called the Law and Economics Center hosts seminars for judges. Chris Wright spoke at these events before becoming energy secretary. Republican leaders are also investigating a non-profit group that teaches judges about climate science. The goal, one expert says, is to make climate cases seem too political for judges to rule against oil companies.
