A space telescope has made an important discovery about cosmic rays. These are high-energy particles that travel across the universe. The DAMPE telescope was launched in 2015 to study these mysterious particles. Scientists believe cosmic rays may come from extreme events like exploding stars or black holes. An international team, including researchers from the University of Geneva, participated in this study.
The scientists found that all cosmic ray particles show the same pattern at a specific energy level. This pattern, called spectral softening, appears at around 15 teravolts for all particle types, from protons to iron. The number of particles drops sharply at this point. These findings support one theory about cosmic ray behavior and reject another. The research was published in Nature.
