Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has reaffirmed Japan's longstanding non-nuclear principles during Thursday's commemorative ceremony at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. The ceremony marked the 81st anniversary of the devastating atomic bombing that destroyed the southwestern Japanese city on August 6, 1945, honoring those who perished and those who survived the attack.
Takaichi joined hibakusha, bereaved families, and foreign and local representatives at the memorial grounds for the solemn observance. At precisely 8:15 a.m., the exact moment the bomb detonated over the city, attendees observed a minute of silence. The initial attack resulted in approximately 140,000 deaths, while a subsequent bombing of Nagasaki three days later claimed roughly 74,000 additional lives.
"The devastation caused by the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the indescribable suffering endured by so many people, must never be repeated," Takaichi declared in her address. Her speech underscored Japan's enduring commitment to nuclear disarmament and the preservation of peace, drawing on the memory of the countless victims who were lost during those fateful days in August 1945.
