Woolworths is a major Australian supermarket chain. They announced a three-month price freeze on 300 essential items. The freeze started on May 1st. The goal was to help customers with rising costs. CEO Amanda Bardwell made the announcement. She said families rely on these items every day.
However, pricing data shows the shop raised prices during the freeze. Chicken fillet prices jumped 33 percent. A can of bean mix went from 60 cents to one dollar in June. Woolworths says these were not real increases. They say the old prices were temporary discounts.
A university professor criticized this approach. She says customers do not track prices every day. They trust what companies say. When companies promise price freezes, people expect stable costs. Professor Bowden says the company did not keep its promise.
