A controversial street card game called Pass is rapidly gaining popularity in Honiara, the capital of Solomon Islands. Despite being illegal, the game has attracted players from all walks of life. Local shopkeepers have set up makeshift gambling tables in backstreets and smoky shelters throughout the city. Authorities are struggling to stamp out the games as more people seek quick financial gains through this high-risk activity.
Irene, a 43-year-old teacher in traditional dress, regularly visits these underground gambling spots. Players receive seven cards and must place them in sequential order. When a number six is dealt, the next player must play a five or seven, continuing the pattern. If a player cannot make a move, they shout "Pass!" With up to 30 rounds per hour, winners can collect substantial sums. Irene has earned $500 this week alone, nearly matching her monthly teaching salary.
