Apple has revealed the iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone and the biggest shift for the iPhone line since the original launched in 2007. The device, priced at nearly $2,000, opens and closes like a passport to double its screen size. When fully opened, it becomes Apple largest phone display while remaining the thinnest phone the company has ever made. The Duo combines the wide screens people love about iPads with the portability and camera features of iPhones.
The launch serves as the first major test for John Ternus, who became Apples new chief executive on September 1st. Speaking at the Surprise and Shine event at Apple campus in Cupertino, Ternus emphasized that the Duo will feel natural to use. He also criticized competitors foldable phones, saying they feel like two phones simply taped together. While other companies have released foldable devices since the late 2010s, this marks Apple entry into the market.
Apple also announced the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, starting at $1,199 and $1,299 respectively. The company highlighted new AI features called Siri AI, which now works with over 300,000 third-party apps. A new tool called Apple Reference Image can verify whether photos were actually taken by an iPhone or generated by AI. Battery life received a significant boost, with the Pro Max offering 45 hours and the Pro offering 36 hours of use.
