Ebola is spreading rapidly across parts of east Africa. The deadly virus kills around half of those it infects. Since the outbreak began in Ituri province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo earlier this month, at least 240 people have died. The virus has already spread to other regions in eastern DRC and the Ugandan capital Kampala.
Health workers are struggling to contain the virus in one of the world's most difficult environments. Ituri is a mining hub where thousands work in close proximity every day. It is also a conflict zone with ongoing fighting between rebel groups. Medical facilities are limited, while displaced people are forced into overcrowded camps. This is the first major Ebola outbreak since the US, UK and other western countries cut humanitarian aid. Experts warn that systems built during previous outbreaks are now too weak to work properly.
