Elon Musk made the German thriller Citizen Vigilante freely available on his platform X. The film, which stars Armie Hammer and was written and directed by Uwe Boll, received substantial publicity following Musk's post. The movie had already been scheduled for US theatrical release on 19 June by Quiver Distribution, though the tech entrepreneur's endorsement significantly amplified its commercial prospects. Musk further promoted the project by announcing that Citizen Vigilante 2 would surpass its predecessor. Quiver subsequently secured worldwide distribution rights.
Germany's film classification body, the FSK (Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle der Filmwirtschaft), declined to certify the production. Boll maintained that this constituted deliberate censorship, engaging legal counsel to challenge the ruling. His appeal failed by a 6-2 margin, with the board citing concerns that the film incited violence against migrants. Boll defended his creative choices, asserting he merely articulated perspectives others were reluctant to express publicly.
The narrative centers on an American businessman who conducts campaigns of vigilante violence against criminal elements within a vaguely defined European setting. Boll revealed he drew inspiration from a 2016 Hamburg case in which three adolescents received suspended sentences following a gang rape. The director featured on a podcast produced by Mark Collett, head of the UK white-nationalist organization Patriotic Alternative. Musk's involvement has elevated the film within the broader culture war, aligning it with his documented support for far-right anti-immigration activists following various incidents, most recently the knife attack in Belfast in June.
