Elon Musk shared the film Citizen Vigilante for free on his platform X. The German thriller stars Armie Hammer and was written and directed by Uwe Boll. The movie was already set for US release on 19 June through Quiver Distribution when Musk's post dramatically boosted its visibility. Musk also announced that a sequel, Citizen Vigilante 2, would be even better. Quiver has since acquired worldwide rights to the film.
Germany's film ratings board, the FSK (Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle der Filmwirtschaft), refused to certify the film. Boll claimed the board called it a deliberate censorship decision. He hired a lawyer to appeal but lost in a 6-2 vote. The board stated the film was inciting violence against migrants. Boll said he was simply telling truths that others would not say.
The film follows an American businessman who wages violent vigilante campaigns against criminals in an unnamed European country. Boll cited a 2016 Hamburg case involving teenagers who received suspended sentences for gang rape as his inspiration. He appeared on a podcast hosted by Mark Collett, leader of the UK white-nationalist group Patriotic Alternative. Musk's involvement has thrust the film into the ongoing culture war, where he has repeatedly backed far-right anti-immigrant voices.
