A new show opens in Gateshead. Two photographers share the same city. Their photos show very different things. Tish Murtha took photos in the 1970s and 1980s. She photographed poor families. The city had no jobs. Many factories closed. Her photos are black and white. They show hard life.
Kuba Ryniewicz came from Poland. He arrived in 2004. He takes photos now. He finds happy moments. He photographs weeds between stones. He photographs pregnant women. His photos make people smile.
The show is called Close to Home. It shows four of Murtha's series. It shows three of Ryniewicz's projects. The photos hang on the walls. Some photos are very big. Visitors can watch video of Murtha talking. She explains why she took these photos. The two photographers see different things. Murtha shows poverty and protest. Ryniewicz shows joy. One wall shows people marching. Another wall shows a guinea pig. The photos are very different. It is hard to see how they connect.
