A team of scientists found out when black holes 'burp'. Black holes are big objects in space. They are very heavy and small. Nothing can escape from a black hole. Not even light. The point with no escape is the event horizon. Stars sometimes go too close to a black hole. The black hole pulls the star apart. This is a messy process. The scientists said black holes are 'messy eaters'.
A star goes near a black hole. The gravity of the black hole tears the star apart. Only half of the star goes into the black hole. The other half goes back into space. It goes out in big jets. These jets are very powerful. They can go very far. The jets can change how a galaxy grows. The scientists call this a black hole 'burp'.
The scientists watched 20 black holes eat stars. They used radio telescopes for this. They found the jets come out at two times. First, jets come out when the black hole eats very fast. Second, jets come out later. This happens when the eating speed drops. The scientists can now tell when jets will come. This helps them use their telescopes better.
